Berkeley 11 months ~ ElephantEats.com

Berkeley has officially turned a year old, so let’s go back and review his 11th month. Firstly, I’m stunned I made it this far without having a nervous breakdown (ok, maybe I had a few).

Berkeley is a healthy, happy, and (if i might say) ADORABLE little boy. He’s always smiling and never cries (knock on wood). He’s gotten a little cranky when he’s teething, but it’s more like whining and usually when he’s also tired. Speaking of which, he got one more tooth this month, although it did a weird disappearing act for a bit before it finally came back- giving him 4 on top and 3 on bottom. He looks so cute when he smiles!

The BIG development this month was learning to walk!!! It started with standing on his own for long periods of time, then regularly taking a step or two. He worked his way up to 5-6 steps and then one day just walked across the room…and he hasn’t stopped moving since ;) I’d say the offical walking-across-a-room-without-falling happened about a week before he turned 1 yr old.

Other physical developments include climbing onto the couch and the ottoman in his room. He also, thankfully, has somewhat learned how to get back down without faceplanting.

He has finally learned to clap his hands when we clap, but it’s more just the motion of bringing his hands together. He hasn’t quite figured out how to make a sound. When we say “how big is Berkeley?” he raises his hands into the “so big!!” motion. Nate’s mom taught him this :)

We got him some musical instruments since he loves music class so much, and after he’s finished clapping them together, he also raises his hands in the air. It’s kind of like you’d do after finishing a drum solo. Anyway, as you can see from the picture below, my mom and I found this new development absolutely hysterical.

We’re teaching him bits of sign language and he can say “more” and “eat.” He won’t use the words on his own but will repeat them if i ask him if he wants “more?” etc.

He has become very generous and will now sometimes offer me his food while he’s eating. How very sweet of him, even if it is being held by a slimy little hand. Sometimes when he’s eating, he will now make this super cheesy squinty-eyed grin face. I think he’s immitating Nate’s funny faces…or is doing a fake smile? Whatever it is, it’s pretty darn cute.

Speaking of eating, we finally introduced dairy. He has been on a dairy/soy-free formula called Elecare ever since his fussiness and reflux when he was 3-4 months old. His GI doc said to try out dairy and see how he does. He seems to be ok with it, and loves yogurt and cheese. I started just giving him one serving every few days but worked up to several days in a row and I don’t see any ill effects. We did, however, try to wean him from pepcid before trying the dairy and he was still showing symptoms of reflux, so we’re back on it.

Berk in the city 1 ~ ElephantEats.com

We ventured on our first longish daytrip with him. We hadn’t done it before because he’s horrible at napping on the go. Anyway, since we moved from the city to the ‘burbs, Nate has really missed Manhattan…particularly Central Park.

Berk in the city 4 ~ ElephantEats.com

He really wanted Berkeley to get to experience Central Park with us, so we took him in and we had a picnic. We decided to go in the morning to avoid traffic and the trip only took about 40 min door to door.

Berk in the city 2 ~ ElephantEats.comWe had a really nice time and couldn’t have gotten a more gorgeous day. Too bad Berkeley finally fell asleep 10 min from home so we drove to Whole Foods where I procedded to lap the parking lot about 50 times while Nate and his mom did some shopping.

Berk in the city 3 ~ ElephantEats.com

His naps have been mostly better, though they vary if he’s experiencing teething pain. He seems to take a good morning nap and then will occasionally boycot his second nap. He’s also been taking a really long time to fall asleep at his second nap and bedtime so I got back in touch with the sleep consultant right towards the end of his 11th month. She recommended having two set nap times (8am and 12:30pm) and then make bedtime 4 hrs from when he wakes from his second nap. We also have to wake him by 9:30 from his first nap. Before this, nap times were based on wake time and on top of being slightly different every day (hard to plan things!), he also was being put down too early since he’s able to stay awake longer than when I started his sleep training 4 months ago. This has been working much better…and has the added bonus that I now occasionally get to put him to bed!!! :)

pool 11 months ~ ElephantEats.com

He’s definitely more aware of himself and understands more. We used to play peekaboo where he’d laugh when i did it, but now he’ll hide his own face to play. He thinks it’s hysterical. He dances a little when music comes on and I’m hoping he doesn’t inherit my dance moves. He doesn’t like strangers much, particularly men. He’ll stare at them and if they try to talk to him, he’ll start quivering his lip.

Berkeley 10 months ~ ElephantEats.com

Wow, 10 months have already flow by, and as I’m writing this, we’re halfway through our 11th month. I literally cannot believe that last year at this time, I was only a couple weeks away from giving birth to Berkeley. It has simultaneously felt like the shortest and longest year of my life.

10 month portrait ~ ElephantEats.com

As always, it was another big month. He learned how to crawl up the stairs, and man is he fast! I can tell he’s gonna be quite the climber. His skills combined with his reckless attitude majorly scares me for the future. I think scraped knees and bumped heads will be a regular occurence around here.

In addition to stairs, his physical development is amazing to watch. He can stand for a few seconds and he officially let go of something and took a step.

baby pool 10 months ~ ElephantEats.com

He seems to be understanding us more, and proceeding to test our limits by doing things he knows he’s not supposed to with a big old grin on his cute little face. It’s so hard to say no to him! He’s been “talking” a ton, but it’s mostly just “ahhhh ahhhh” sounds.

10 months family portrait ~ ElephantEats.com

He started doing this weird thing where he opens and closes his mouth like a guppy and it’s so cute. We’re not sure why he does it. Maybe immitating chewing? He also does this cute thing where he closes his eyes while he’s eating. Again, not sure why he does it. I think it’s an immitation thing as well from when i do peek-a-boo with him. He also does this absolutely HORRID tooth grinding that makes me cringe so much! He does it when he’s teething and his teeth are really hurting. It literally gives me the same reaction as nails on a chalkboard.*shudder*

10 months Berk and Papa ~ ElephantEats.com

He’s gotten so much better at picking up food and has tried some new things. He loves fruit, but especially melon, kiwi and blueberries.

Some other tricks he picked up this month:

  • Throwing all his pacifiers out of his crib at naptime and bedtime and then crying because he doesn’t have them to actually go to sleep.
  • Taking a toy and proceeding to push it around the house like a hockey puck
  • Crawling fast away from you while giggling when you say “I’m gonna get you” to him
  • Said his first word!!! “Uh-oh”
  • Throwing/dropping food off his highchair tray
  • Shaking his head no while he drops food off his highchair because he knows he’s not supposed to do it

10 months beach walk ~ ElephantEats.com
He has also started to better grasp the concept of his toys now that he’s finally sitting up and thus able to have access to his hands to play with them. He tries to put the rings on the stacking ring toy we have but doesn’t quite have the dexterity yet.

10 months baby beach ~ ElephantEats.com

Another first this month was that he ate a piece of cat food. I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. He always beelines straight towards it when he crawls into the kitchen and this particular morning I wasn’t paying attention. I yanked him up off the floor the second I saw his hand go into LC’s bowl and didn’t think he had done anything besides touch it. I immediately carried him to the sink and washed his hands. But that sneaky boy must have had a piece of food in his hand that he put in his mouth while i was carrying him, because the next thing I know, I saw him drooling and moving his mouth in a weird way like he had something in it. I opened his mouth and stuck my finger in and pulled out a piece of cat food that had already broken apart in his mouth. I’m sure he ended up swallowing part of it. My biggest worry was always that he’d choke on the catfood, but he tends to suck on things rather than swallow them so it dissolved in his mouth a lot. He had cat breath the whole rest of the day!

We also went down to my parent’s new beach house at the NJ shore for the first time this month. Berkeley loved how open it was so he got to crawl around a lot more. He also dipped his toes in the sand/ocean, and took a little dip in the water at the baby beach which is in the bay rather than the ocean. He loved splashing around (and drinking saltwater)! Oh, and he went in the baby pool that we got him.

Also now that he’s bigger and sitting better, we have officially moved him from the baby bathtub to the real one- though we have a bath seat for him since he’s still a bit wobbly.

10 months beach walk 2 ~ ElephantEats.com

For a while he was taking a good morning nap so his afternoon nap was later and thus he was going to bed a little later. Once or twice I even got to see him when I got home from work. Sadly, that has since disappeared. He also took a couple of almost 2 hour naps! I thought that would stick around but it was just a lucky couple of days I guess. He also slept through the fire alarm going off (at night) several times…apparently the new smoke detector in my parent’s house is defective.

Berkeley 9 months ~ ElephantEats.com

Not sure when I’ll ever be posting a recipe again :( Haha, for now this blog is becoming my very own baby book that I already look back on with nostalgia. That’s not to say that I don’t love the little boy that Berkeley is slowing becoming. Next up on my “i can’t wait til..” list is real hugs and kisses from him!!!

This post is overdue and it’s already almost time for his 10 month update. I don’t know if not much happened during his ninth month or if I just forgot to take note.

We had lots of visits from grandparents. My mom is in the pic below, which we took to show how big his belly gets after he eats :)

full belly ~ ElephantEats.com

Berkeley turned 9 months old while we were in Florida, so techinically the plane ride home should be included in this post. He really was very well behaved, albeit his usual active self, until we got ready to descend. By this point he was overdue for his nap and was very very tired. I strapped him into his carseat which didn’t make him happy, because he really hates being restrained. Between that, being tired, and possibly having his ears pop, he screamed during decent. I put the car seat cover over his seat hoping that the darkness would encourage a nap and he did finally pass out. We were totally THOSE people with the screaming kid! It didn’t last long though, and when we landed, the women in front of us said he was very good. Berkeley napped through exiting the plane, meeting Nate at baggage and getting all the way out to the car before he woke.

Blueberry face ~ Elephanteats.com

Blueberry face- what happens when babies feed themselves

He’s definitely beginning to assert himself more lately. He refused food a couple times- pushed spoon away or pushed the food out of his mouth (yellow squash pieces). He also really just wants to feed himself. He tried a bunch more new foods, all with success- strawberries and watermelon. He loves blueberries and watermelon the most. He has top teeth coming in and a new bottom tooth. He’s also gotten much better at picking food up.

Our nanny told us that he threw his first real tantrum when she blocked his way so he couldn’t get into the kitchen. Apparently he started screaming and hitting her face, haha.

He loves doing this weird head tilt thing, which usually looks super cute. He usually does it when he’s eating. In this pic it looks more like an exorcist baby though:

He has perfected cruising while holding things, and crawls SO quickly. He also stood for a few seconds without holding onto anything, before he finally fell. I think walking isn’t too far off.

Also, in major news, he finally figured out how to sit!!! He doesn’t love it, though, and usually prefers sitting leaning back with knees bent and his shins on the ground under his thighs. I’ll have to get it on camera because it’s pretty cute.

Sitting ~ ElephantEats.com

His naps are a little better. I’m still hoping they get long enough that he can stay up late enough for me to see him before bed :(

In music class he isn’t shy anymore and just crawls over to the instruments. He’s the one sprawled out on the ground below :)

Music Class ~ ElephantEats.com

He seems to be laughing more, especially when playing peekaboo. He’s been gentler when petting LC (instead of just smacking her in the face or grabbing her fur).

Nate celebrated his first Father’s Day! I got them matching ninja kitty shirts :) L.C. picked them out.

I also got a dino book so Nate could instill his dino obsession into Berkelely from an early age. Unfortunately, Berkeley will only sit still for books that have things you can touch in them. Otherwise they usually end up in his mouth or thrown on the floor.

Berkeley 8 month ~ ElephantEats.com

*this post is a wee bit late, as Berkeley is almost 10 months old now. His 9 month update will be coming soon, hopefully…

I know I say this every month, but 8 months was a big one for little Berkeley! Pardon all the pictures, but they’re all so cute I couldn’t choose :)

He officially started crawling on his hands and knees instead of crab crawling, and man is he fast! He pulls himself up on anything and everything and even cruises a little bit (whenever we put him down for a nap or he wakes up from one, we see him on the monitor standing in his crib walking around the perimeter…or throwing all of his pacifiers one by one out of the crib).

8 month selfie ~ ElephantEats.com

He doesn’t quite understand that when he’s standing and he lets go, he’ll fall, which has led to his head smacking against the floor a couple times and him crying :( We watch his every move but i swear it happens in the split second i turn my head! He has also learned how to lower himself from standing by bending his knees and putting one hand back on the ground, but he doesn’t always remember to do it.

8 month swimming ~ ElephantEats.com

He started his swim class! He’s the youngest one and doesn’t really understand the stuff he’s supposed to be doing, but he loves the water. He splashes and almost does a doggy-paddle thing that is SO CUTE…with me holding him of course. We even dunked him under the water a couple times, which he does not like. But he only cries for like 2 seconds when he comes up and then he’s fine.

8 month backyard ~ ElephantEats.com

The weather’s been nice so we’ve been spending lots of outside time, sitting on porch, playing in backyard.

P.S. He’s not sure what he thinks about grass…

8 month grass ~ ElephantEats.com

He tried one of those MumMum biscuits but he didn’t understand that after biting off a piece, you have a to chew it. So he just kept biting and shoving it in his mouth and biting again. I don’t think he understood that he was biting piece off since it doesn’t happen when he bites his toys. He’s still not great at chewing, but he’s been eating real finger foods now! I cut everything into very small pieces and make sure that they’re soft enough that if he swallows without chewing, it won’t choke him or hurt going down.

8 month porch ~ ElephantEats.com

He freaking LOVES eating. There is nothing he won’t eat and he just keeps shoving things in his mouth…or grabbing the spoon if you’re feeding him. We tried lots of new foods this month- scrambled eggs, blueberry waffles (made by grandpa), blueberries, steamed pears, sweet potato sticks (definitely his favorite). My favorite thing is when he eats scrambled eggs, he doesn’t chew them so they’re a little difficult to get down, so he just takes a drink of water between bits to wash it down, haha.

8 month blueberry waffle ~ ElephantEats.com

Speaking of water, he loves it so much, and he figured out how to use a straw cup! He’s so good at it and it’s the most adorable thing. He can drink a ton of water with his meals so sometimes i take it away since he still spits up some.

He also started reaching for people when he wants them ( i love this!!!). And towards the end of the month he’s been having some separation anxiety. It makes me so sad to see him get upset, but at the same time I love knowing that he loves me so much that he gets sad when I leave. He’s easily distracted tho, so it’s not a big deal to sneak out. We’ve been practicing waving and saying bye-bye, but he doesn’t get the waving thing yet…at least not enough to repeat it back.

8 month Berkeley ~ ElephantEats.com

I’ve been trying to do some sign language with him before i give him food, drink, milk, when he sees LC, etc. I’m not too consistent with doing it but I have no idea if he understands what i’m doing yet.

8 month Berkeley porch 2~ ElephantEats.com

By the end of the month, he seemed more and more like a real little person, and it’s amazing. He’s much more dexterous with his hands and is practicing his pincer grasp but hasn’t gotten too good yet. He totally gets books now and when I read him a “pat the bunny” type book, he reaches for the textures to feel them. it’s so cute!!! He sometimes tries to turn the pages, but not always. Also, he likes when i read the same book to him 5 times in a row, haha. Oh, and my mom bought him this toy that talks when you open and close it, and he figured it out and kept opening and closing it! I was so impressed.

Berkeley had his first plane ride this month! We went to Florida to visit my parents.

My mom flew there and back with me so I had help on the plane, since Nate couldn’t join. I seriously don’t know how moms travel without help. Between a baby that doesn’t sit still and a TON of bags, there is no way i could have done it alone.

Berkeley's Garden 1 ~ ElephantEats.com

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there! I hope you’re able to spend some time with your children today. Sadly my mom is in Florida (she was here a couple weeks ago), but we’re lucky enough to have Nate’s mom stay over and obviously I’ll have little Berkeley with me!…unless he has other plans?

Berkeley's Garden 3 ~ ElephantEats.com

Berkeley LOVES being outside. Now that he’s sleeping through the night and on an actual schedule during the day, we’ve actually had time to do things, and being outside has been a priority with this gorgeous spring weather. Prior to his sleep training, we spent the majority of his awake time in his room playing…it didn’t help that the weather was cold. Now that it’s warm, though, we’ve been out taking walks, enjoying the front porch, or sitting in our yard.

Berkeley's Garden 4 ~ ElephantEats.com

This Sunday will be my first Mother’s Day as an actual mom (did being a cat mom count?), and this is also our first spring in our new house with a little one!  One thing I’ve been wanting to do in our backyard is plant an herb garden. We hired out some landscaping last year, but last summer I was a tired pregnant lady with no energy for my own projects. Now that I finally have time to cook again, having fresh herbs right outside my back door would be so nice! Once I master herbs, I’m going to move on to vegetables. I want Berkeley to grow up knowing where the things he eats come from.

Berkeley's Garden 5 ~ ElephantEats.com

I had been procrastinating planting the garden because I’m lazy I needed to go out and buy some sort of container, soil, etc, so when Personal Creations reached out to me as part of their #LoveGrowsHere movement and offered me anything from the “Garden” section of their website, I jumped at the opportunity! I ended up selecting a Galvanized Metal Planter on a stand and I even got to have it personalized :) They offered me this gift not with a requirement to blog about it, but simply to help inspire a blog post of me and Berkeley outside in the fresh spring air working on a beautiful garden space, and that’s exactly what they did!

 Berkeley's Garden 6 ~ ElephantEats.com

The planter arrived and was EXACTLY what I had been imagining for my herb garden. I went to Home Depot and got some Potting Mix (I read it’s better for herbs than potting soil), garden gloves and a spade, and all my favorite fresh herbs- basil, dill, cilantro and rosemary. The planter didn’t have any drainage in it, which I had read is crucial for growing herbs, so I simply drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom of the container. It was really easy.

Berkeley is a little young to help with the planting of the garden since he puts everything he touches in his mouth, so he was more of a bystander on this project. Hopefully next summer he can help me plant some veggies!

Berkeley's Garden 2 ~ ElephantEats.com

Personal Creations also let me pick out a plant or two from their sister site, ProPlants, to help with my project. They sadly didn’t carry any herbs, but I instead selected a gorgeous lavender wreath (which for some reason I can’t find on their site anymore) for my front door. It came packaged really well so it arrived in one piece- something not easy to do with dried flowers! It smells SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good and totally brightens our door :)
