Berkeley 10 months ~

Wow, 10 months have already flow by, and as I’m writing this, we’re halfway through our 11th month. I literally cannot believe that last year at this time, I was only a couple weeks away from giving birth to Berkeley. It has simultaneously felt like the shortest and longest year of my life.

10 month portrait ~

As always, it was another big month. He learned how to crawl up the stairs, and man is he fast! I can tell he’s gonna be quite the climber. His skills combined with his reckless attitude majorly scares me for the future. I think scraped knees and bumped heads will be a regular occurence around here.

In addition to stairs, his physical development is amazing to watch. He can stand for a few seconds and he officially let go of something and took a step.

baby pool 10 months ~

He seems to be understanding us more, and proceeding to test our limits by doing things he knows he’s not supposed to with a big old grin on his cute little face. It’s so hard to say no to him! He’s been “talking” a ton, but it’s mostly just “ahhhh ahhhh” sounds.

10 months family portrait ~

He started doing this weird thing where he opens and closes his mouth like a guppy and it’s so cute. We’re not sure why he does it. Maybe immitating chewing? He also does this cute thing where he closes his eyes while he’s eating. Again, not sure why he does it. I think it’s an immitation thing as well from when i do peek-a-boo with him. He also does this absolutely HORRID tooth grinding that makes me cringe so much! He does it when he’s teething and his teeth are really hurting. It literally gives me the same reaction as nails on a chalkboard.*shudder*

10 months Berk and Papa ~

He’s gotten so much better at picking up food and has tried some new things. He loves fruit, but especially melon, kiwi and blueberries.

Some other tricks he picked up this month:

  • Throwing all his pacifiers out of his crib at naptime and bedtime and then crying because he doesn’t have them to actually go to sleep.
  • Taking a toy and proceeding to push it around the house like a hockey puck
  • Crawling fast away from you while giggling when you say “I’m gonna get you” to him
  • Said his first word!!! “Uh-oh”
  • Throwing/dropping food off his highchair tray
  • Shaking his head no while he drops food off his highchair because he knows he’s not supposed to do it

10 months beach walk ~
He has also started to better grasp the concept of his toys now that he’s finally sitting up and thus able to have access to his hands to play with them. He tries to put the rings on the stacking ring toy we have but doesn’t quite have the dexterity yet.

10 months baby beach ~

Another first this month was that he ate a piece of cat food. I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. He always beelines straight towards it when he crawls into the kitchen and this particular morning I wasn’t paying attention. I yanked him up off the floor the second I saw his hand go into LC’s bowl and didn’t think he had done anything besides touch it. I immediately carried him to the sink and washed his hands. But that sneaky boy must have had a piece of food in his hand that he put in his mouth while i was carrying him, because the next thing I know, I saw him drooling and moving his mouth in a weird way like he had something in it. I opened his mouth and stuck my finger in and pulled out a piece of cat food that had already broken apart in his mouth. I’m sure he ended up swallowing part of it. My biggest worry was always that he’d choke on the catfood, but he tends to suck on things rather than swallow them so it dissolved in his mouth a lot. He had cat breath the whole rest of the day!

10 months lifeguard chair ~

We also went down to my parent’s new beach house at the NJ shore for the first time this month. Berkeley loved how open it was so he got to crawl around a lot more. He also dipped his toes in the sand/ocean, and took a little dip in the water at the baby beach which is in the bay rather than the ocean. He loved splashing around (and drinking saltwater)! Oh, and he went in the baby pool that we got him.

10 months baby pool at beach house ~

Also now that he’s bigger and sitting better, we have officially moved him from the baby bathtub to the real one- though we have a bath seat for him since he’s still a bit wobbly.

10 months beach walk 2 ~

For a while he was taking a good morning nap so his afternoon nap was later and thus he was going to bed a little later. Once or twice I even got to see him when I got home from work. Sadly, that has since disappeared. He also took a couple of almost 2 hour naps! I thought that would stick around but it was just a lucky couple of days I guess. He also slept through the fire alarm going off (at night) several times…apparently the new smoke detector in my parent’s house is defective.

Stats: 20 lbs, Size 3 Pampers Swaddlers diapers (Size 3 Huggies Overnite with a booster pad for nighttime)

Teeth: 3 on top and 3 on bottom.

10 months family beach pic ~

Trying to walk, crawling up stairs, standing, eating!, saying “ooooh,” any type of melon, throwing pacis out of his crib, pushing his toys around the floor while crawling, getting tickled, shaking his head “no” while throwing things off his highchair

Pretty much same as last month: teething, being in his car seat, not being allowed to do something he wants, not much else…he’s a happy boy!

10 months beach towel ~

Schedule (pretty much same as 9 months):

between 5-6 am: wake up. I don’t go get him until 6am though.

6:15 am: 7 oz bottle of formula followed by baby oatmeal (made with prune juice) and some fruit pieces

7:30-8 am: 1 hr-1.5 hr nap

9:30 am: 6 oz bottle of formula

11-11:30ish: lunch (he eats all sorts of things: sweet potato chunks, fruit, mini meatballs, avocado, eggplant, peppers…)

11:30/12:30ish: 1 hr-1.5 hr nap. Also still occassionally 1/2 hr :(

1:30-2ish (when he wakes): 6 oz bottle of formula

3 pm- more solids (technically his dinner since he goes to bed so early)

4:30: 7 oz bottle of formula

5pm-5:30: bedtime! His naps have been a little later and longer now so he’s actually made it til 5:30 quite often. Still hoping he can regularly make it til 6pm soon so I can put him to bed.

Berkeley 9 months ~

Not sure when I’ll ever be posting a recipe again :( Haha, for now this blog is becoming my very own baby book that I already look back on with nostalgia. That’s not to say that I don’t love the little boy that Berkeley is slowing becoming. Next up on my “i can’t wait til..” list is real hugs and kisses from him!!!

This post is overdue and it’s already almost time for his 10 month update. I don’t know if not much happened during his ninth month or if I just forgot to take note.

We had lots of visits from grandparents. My mom is in the pic below, which we took to show how big his belly gets after he eats :)

full belly ~

Berkeley turned 9 months old while we were in Florida, so techinically the plane ride home should be included in this post. He really was very well behaved, albeit his usual active self, until we got ready to descend. By this point he was overdue for his nap and was very very tired. I strapped him into his carseat which didn’t make him happy, because he really hates being restrained. Between that, being tired, and possibly having his ears pop, he screamed during decent. I put the car seat cover over his seat hoping that the darkness would encourage a nap and he did finally pass out. We were totally THOSE people with the screaming kid! It didn’t last long though, and when we landed, the women in front of us said he was very good. Berkeley napped through exiting the plane, meeting Nate at baggage and getting all the way out to the car before he woke.

Blueberry face ~

Blueberry face- what happens when babies feed themselves

He’s definitely beginning to assert himself more lately. He refused food a couple times- pushed spoon away or pushed the food out of his mouth (yellow squash pieces). He also really just wants to feed himself. He tried a bunch more new foods, all with success- strawberries and watermelon. He loves blueberries and watermelon the most. He has top teeth coming in and a new bottom tooth. He’s also gotten much better at picking food up.

Our nanny told us that he threw his first real tantrum when she blocked his way so he couldn’t get into the kitchen. Apparently he started screaming and hitting her face, haha.

He loves doing this weird head tilt thing, which usually looks super cute. He usually does it when he’s eating. In this pic it looks more like an exorcist baby though:

Exorcist baby ~

He has perfected cruising while holding things, and crawls SO quickly. He also stood for a few seconds without holding onto anything, before he finally fell. I think walking isn’t too far off.

Also, in major news, he finally figured out how to sit!!! He doesn’t love it, though, and usually prefers sitting leaning back with knees bent and his shins on the ground under his thighs. I’ll have to get it on camera because it’s pretty cute.

Sitting ~

His naps are a little better. I’m still hoping they get long enough that he can stay up late enough for me to see him before bed :(

In music class he isn’t shy anymore and just crawls over to the instruments. He’s the one sprawled out on the ground below :)

Music Class ~

He seems to be laughing more, especially when playing peekaboo. He’s been gentler when petting LC (instead of just smacking her in the face or grabbing her fur).

Nate celebrated his first Father’s Day! I got them matching ninja kitty shirts :) L.C. picked them out.

Father's Day 2015 ~

I also got a dino book so Nate could instill his dino obsession into Berkelely from an early age. Unfortunately, Berkeley will only sit still for books that have things you can touch in them. Otherwise they usually end up in his mouth or thrown on the floor.

Swim Class ~

Teething, being in his car seat, not being allowed to do something he wants, not much else…he’s a happy boy!

Sitting 2 ~

Schedule (pretty much same as 8 months):

between 5-6 am: wake up. I don’t go get him until 6am though.

6:15 am: 7 oz bottle of formula followed by baby oatmeal (made with prune juice) and some fruit pieces

7:30-8 am: 1 hr-1.5 hr nap. still occassionally 1/2 hr.

Berkeley 8 month ~

*this post is a wee bit late, as Berkeley is almost 10 months old now. His 9 month update will be coming soon, hopefully…

I know I say this every month, but 8 months was a big one for little Berkeley! Pardon all the pictures, but they’re all so cute I couldn’t choose :)

He officially started crawling on his hands and knees instead of crab crawling, and man is he fast! He pulls himself up on anything and everything and even cruises a little bit (whenever we put him down for a nap or he wakes up from one, we see him on the monitor standing in his crib walking around the perimeter…or throwing all of his pacifiers one by one out of the crib).

8 month selfie ~

He doesn’t quite understand that when he’s standing and he lets go, he’ll fall, which has led to his head smacking against the floor a couple times and him crying :( We watch his every move but i swear it happens in the split second i turn my head! He has also learned how to lower himself from standing by bending his knees and putting one hand back on the ground, but he doesn’t always remember to do it.

8 month swimming ~

He started his swim class! He’s the youngest one and doesn’t really understand the stuff he’s supposed to be doing, but he loves the water. He splashes and almost does a doggy-paddle thing that is SO CUTE…with me holding him of course. We even dunked him under the water a couple times, which he does not like. But he only cries for like 2 seconds when he comes up and then he’s fine.

8 month backyard ~

The weather’s been nice so we’ve been spending lots of outside time, sitting on porch, playing in backyard.

P.S. He’s not sure what he thinks about grass…

8 month grass ~

He tried one of those MumMum biscuits but he didn’t understand that after biting off a piece, you have a to chew it. So he just kept biting and shoving it in his mouth and biting again. I don’t think he understood that he was biting piece off since it doesn’t happen when he bites his toys. He’s still not great at chewing, but he’s been eating real finger foods now! I cut everything into very small pieces and make sure that they’re soft enough that if he swallows without chewing, it won’t choke him or hurt going down.

8 month porch ~

He freaking LOVES eating. There is nothing he won’t eat and he just keeps shoving things in his mouth…or grabbing the spoon if you’re feeding him. We tried lots of new foods this month- scrambled eggs, blueberry waffles (made by grandpa), blueberries, steamed pears, sweet potato sticks (definitely his favorite). My favorite thing is when he eats scrambled eggs, he doesn’t chew them so they’re a little difficult to get down, so he just takes a drink of water between bits to wash it down, haha.

8 month blueberry waffle ~

Speaking of water, he loves it so much, and he figured out how to use a straw cup! He’s so good at it and it’s the most adorable thing. He can drink a ton of water with his meals so sometimes i take it away since he still spits up some.

He also started reaching for people when he wants them ( i love this!!!). And towards the end of the month he’s been having some separation anxiety. It makes me so sad to see him get upset, but at the same time I love knowing that he loves me so much that he gets sad when I leave. He’s easily distracted tho, so it’s not a big deal to sneak out. We’ve been practicing waving and saying bye-bye, but he doesn’t get the waving thing yet…at least not enough to repeat it back.

8 month Berkeley ~

I’ve been trying to do some sign language with him before i give him food, drink, milk, when he sees LC, etc. I’m not too consistent with doing it but I have no idea if he understands what i’m doing yet.

8 month Berkeley porch 2~

By the end of the month, he seemed more and more like a real little person, and it’s amazing. He’s much more dexterous with his hands and is practicing his pincer grasp but hasn’t gotten too good yet. He totally gets books now and when I read him a “pat the bunny” type book, he reaches for the textures to feel them. it’s so cute!!! He sometimes tries to turn the pages, but not always. Also, he likes when i read the same book to him 5 times in a row, haha. Oh, and my mom bought him this toy that talks when you open and close it, and he figured it out and kept opening and closing it! I was so impressed.

Berkeley had his first plane ride this month! We went to Florida to visit my parents.

8 month first plane ride ~

My mom flew there and back with me so I had help on the plane, since Nate couldn’t join. I seriously don’t know how moms travel without help. Between a baby that doesn’t sit still and a TON of bags, there is no way i could have done it alone.

8 month Florida clothes ~

Ready to hit the golf course..

We had a lot of fun in Florida- taking walks, going swimming, showing him off to my mom’s friends.

8 month Florida swimming ~

Stats: 18ish lbs, Size 3 Pampers Swaddlers diapers (Size 3 Huggies Overnite with a booster pad for nighttime)

Crawling on his hands and knees, swim class, lots of outside time, sitting on porch, playing in backyard, EATING, reaching for mom or dad to be held, drinking from his straw cup, standing and cruising, grabbing spoon and trying to feed himself, turning pages in books (sometimes backwards), throwing pacis out of crib when he wakes before i get him.

When mom or dad leaves the room, when you don’t feed him fast enough or take his water away before he’s done, napping (sometimes), staying still for more than 2 seconds, being restrained for too long in a car seat, getting dunked under water (in swim class), being startled.

8 month tired Berkeley ~

“My 8th month was exhausting!”

between 5-6 am: wake up

6:15 am: 7 oz bottle of formula followed by baby oatmeal (made with prune juice) and some pureed fruit or fruit pieces

7:30-8 am: 1/2 hr-1.5 hr nap (the latter if we’re lucky)

9:30 am: 6 oz bottle of formula

11-11:30ish: lunch (he eats all sorts of things: sweet potato chunks, fruit, mini meatballs, avocado, eggplant, peppers…)

11:30/12:30ish: 1/2 hr-1.5 hr nap (the time he goes down for his nap depends on when he got up from last one)

1:30-2ish (when he wakes): 6 oz bottle of formula

3 pm- more solids (technically his dinner since he goes to bed so early)

4:30: 7 oz bottle of formula

5pm: bedtime! he’s usually out within 20 min, sometimes even within 5 min.

Berkeley's Garden 1 ~

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there! I hope you’re able to spend some time with your children today. Sadly my mom is in Florida (she was here a couple weeks ago), but we’re lucky enough to have Nate’s mom stay over and obviously I’ll have little Berkeley with me!…unless he has other plans?

Berkeley's Garden 3 ~

Berkeley LOVES being outside. Now that he’s sleeping through the night and on an actual schedule during the day, we’ve actually had time to do things, and being outside has been a priority with this gorgeous spring weather. Prior to his sleep training, we spent the majority of his awake time in his room playing…it didn’t help that the weather was cold. Now that it’s warm, though, we’ve been out taking walks, enjoying the front porch, or sitting in our yard.

Berkeley's Garden 4 ~

This Sunday will be my first Mother’s Day as an actual mom (did being a cat mom count?), and this is also our first spring in our new house with a little one!  One thing I’ve been wanting to do in our backyard is plant an herb garden. We hired out some landscaping last year, but last summer I was a tired pregnant lady with no energy for my own projects. Now that I finally have time to cook again, having fresh herbs right outside my back door would be so nice! Once I master herbs, I’m going to move on to vegetables. I want Berkeley to grow up knowing where the things he eats come from.

Berkeley's Garden 5 ~

I had been procrastinating planting the garden because I’m lazy I needed to go out and buy some sort of container, soil, etc, so when Personal Creations reached out to me as part of their #LoveGrowsHere movement and offered me anything from the “Garden” section of their website, I jumped at the opportunity! I ended up selecting a Galvanized Metal Planter on a stand and I even got to have it personalized :) They offered me this gift not with a requirement to blog about it, but simply to help inspire a blog post of me and Berkeley outside in the fresh spring air working on a beautiful garden space, and that’s exactly what they did!

 Berkeley's Garden 6 ~

The planter arrived and was EXACTLY what I had been imagining for my herb garden. I went to Home Depot and got some Potting Mix (I read it’s better for herbs than potting soil), garden gloves and a spade, and all my favorite fresh herbs- basil, dill, cilantro and rosemary. The planter didn’t have any drainage in it, which I had read is crucial for growing herbs, so I simply drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom of the container. It was really easy.

Berkeley is a little young to help with the planting of the garden since he puts everything he touches in his mouth, so he was more of a bystander on this project. Hopefully next summer he can help me plant some veggies!

Berkeley's Garden 2 ~

Personal Creations also let me pick out a plant or two from their sister site, ProPlants, to help with my project. They sadly didn’t carry any herbs, but I instead selected a gorgeous lavender wreath (which for some reason I can’t find on their site anymore) for my front door. It came packaged really well so it arrived in one piece- something not easy to do with dried flowers! It smells SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good and totally brightens our door :) Lavender Wreath ~

Berkeley 7 month ~

I would say the most significant thing that happened during Berkeley’s 7th month is that we sleep trained him! I have actually gotten a full night of sleep for almost a month now and it feels GLORIOUS. You’ll notice how many pics there are in this post, and it’s because we actually got to DO STUFF since he’s been sleeping well :)

Nate and Berk ~

My favorite pic ever!

He’s still got some issues- namely his naps still aren’t great which means his bedtime is at 5pm.This early bedtime leads to two issues: 1) he wakes up around 5 (though we don’t get him until 6) and 2) he’s asleep before we get home from work so I only get to see him before I leave for work on weekdays! :(

 Cardinals Opening Day ~

We wanted to wait to sleep train until Berkeley’s reflux was under control. I’m not sure if it’s because we upped his meds to the maximum dose for his weight, or if he’s gradually outgrowing it (fingers crossed) but he’s been seeming much less uncomfortable and spitting up less.

I bought a couple sleep training books (that used different methods) and read a ton of online articles. I wanted to attempt sleep training on my own but after a couple nights I gave up. I wasn’t comfortable letting him cry without knowing that I was doing it the right way. I mean there isn’t really a “right way” but depending on your child’s disposition, etc, there is definitely a way that will work best for him/her.

Trader Joe's Run ~

Our weekly Trader Joe’s run.

We ended up working with Pickles and Ice Cream sleep consulting, who I had read about on a funny mom blog I read called Mommy Shorts. Erin, the sleep consultant, doesn’t use one training method specifically, but I would say that it’s a modified CIO (cry it out) plan, with timed check-ins. After filling out an online intake form, she schedules a 45 min (or in my case slightly longer because I ask so many questions) phone call. During the phone call she basically tells you how the plan is going to work. I guess she comes up with the basics beforehand, based on the intake form, so you should really try to be super detailed on that. After the call, she sends you a very detailed pdf file of the whole plan. The plan starts the night after you receive the plan, and she gives you 8 days of email and phone support. I ended up calling her numerous times and she guarantees she’ll call you back within 4 hrs. Emails are answered by the end of the day. I’m sure she was mighty sick of me and my incessant questions by day 1, but she didn’t show it.

Berkeley 7 months old ~
Ignore my creepy face in the back…

Night 1 involved crying, but never for longer than 10 minutes before I got to check on him (i.e. go in, put a paci in his mouth and then leave). He took an hour to fall asleep. That was the longest hour of my life. Nate wasn’t home so I was doing it on my own and I was on the verge of tears myself. Finally after an hour, Berkeley let out one final scream and then literally conked out. It was such a contrast (the screaming and then immediately passing out) that I laughed out loud. I was already feeling slightly more confident.

Porch Fun ~

Porch fun

He woke up a bunch during the night but I only had to check on him once because he was able to self-soothe- you only check on him if it’s more than 10 STRAIGHT minutes of crying, but he would cry on and off. Night two he was asleep within 15 min. Night three he passed out in 5 min. Oh, and he slept thru the night by the second night! I was told night five he might have a regression. Sadly because his bedtime is super early until his naps are better, it was also the first night EVER that i wasn’t home to put him to sleep :( His nanny told me he cried for 15 min straight so she went in to give him his paci and he went right to sleep after. Not too bad! He was up during the night a bunch but never cried. He just played in his crib and tried to resettle himself.

Family Selfie April 2014 ~

In the beginning when he woke up crying, he would be all cuddly, which I loved…but he doesn’t cry at all anymore. He just plays and talks to himself until we go get him. Sometimes he’ll let out a protest cry if he’s been in there a while awake, but it rarely has tears. If he would NAP LONGER, he wouldn’t have to be awake in his crib so long!!!

Baby selfie ~

Baby selfie!

We’re a month in and I can already say that doing sleep training was the best decision I’ve ever made, second only to getting an epidural. Haha! As I mentioned before, his naps aren’t so great yet, but they’re still WAY better than when I had to hold him for 2 hours or take 30 min to rock him to sleep. Now I just put him down awake and leave the room. He usually falls asleep within 15 minutes. Lately he’s been crawling around the crib and trying to scale the walls of it, but he eventually tires out and rests his little head. Ideally his afternoon nap should be around 2-3 hours, but it currently ranges from 30 min to 1 hour 20 min, hence the early bedtime. But I’m supposed to leave him in his crib for 90 min minimum, so even if he wakes early, I still have some time to myself- hooray!!!

Berkeley Sleeping ~

How cute is Berkeley when he sleeps?!

In addition to conquering nightime sleep, Berkeley hit some major milestones this month. He still can’t sit unassisted, but he started and mastered army crawling, and just started to take some steps on his hands and knees too! Usually after a few steps he goes back to army crawling because it’s faster. He also can pull himself up to standing…which was crazy the first time he did it. It makes sense though since he loves to stand. He hasn’t quite figured out what to do once he gets to a standing position and thinks that it’s ok to just let go of whatever he’s holding on to. This means he gets monitored carefully. He’s a tough guy and doesn’t even flinch when he bonks his head on things…which happens quite a lot since the boy doesn’t sit still.

Swings ~

First time on the swings

He also started going to music class! I don’t get to go since it’s on a weekday, but I did get to come this last Friday and it was so much fun :) His nanny told me that the first time he was scared of the drums and was also just overwhelmed with all the new sights. When I came (his third class), he was warming up to it and was pretty smiley.

Oh, he also got much better at eating solids this month and doesn’t really push any out of his mouth. He’s still doing purees though.

Can’t wait to see what next month brings!!!

Swings 2 ~

Stats: 17 lb 5 oz, 28 in. Size 3 diapers.

Eating his toes, doing stuff! (because he has a schedule now), music class, almost sitting up, his wubbanub, putting pacifier in his own mouth, high pitched squealing (except when he lost his voice due to crying), crawling to his toy bin and pushing it over and sticking his head in it, kissing himself in mirror, foot tapping (constantly), throwing a fit when you take away his water, etc., face grabbing, eating solids!, taking walks, getting on hands and knees- crawling a few steps, throwing pacifiers out of the crib, toes, watching cars from our front porch, yelling, pulling to standing!, trying to grab the birds in the mobile above his crib, his grandparents, and he LOVES being outside.

Stroller ride ~ Elephant

Staying still, sitting, waiting too long for his breakfast

He finally has a schedule now that we sleep trained!!

He wakes up before 6am most days, but we don’t go get him until 6. He gets a 7 oz bottle and then we go downstairs for some breakfast (oatmeal and some fruit puree, plus about 1 oz of water to drink). Depending on what time he gets up, he has his first nap around 7:30-8 and it lasts anywhere from 30 min to 1 hr 40 min. We don’t get him out of his crib until at least 75 min tho. When he wakes he gets a little 3.5 oz bottle. He sometimes gets solids about an hour later, and then he gets a 6 oz bottle 30 min before his next nap. The next nap happens somewhere between 11:30-12:30 and lasts about the same as his first nap. He gets a 6 oz bottle when he wakes and then a 7 oz bottle about 30 min before bedtime. Bedtime is currently between 5-5:30. I’m hoping it’s later at my next update!!!
